Carrying Forward the Legacy of a Visionary

Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya
Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya
"Mahamana" — Founder of BHU

Banaras Hindu University has long been recognized as one of India's premier institutions for higher education, medical sciences, research, and healthcare delivery. The foundation of the University is deeply rooted in the visionary ideals of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, one of India's greatest educationists, nation-builders, and social reformers. Respected as "Mahamana," he saw BHU as a national hub for knowledge, service, character development, and humanitarian ideals rather than just an educational establishment.

Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya firmly believed that healthcare and education are among the strongest pillars of national development. His vision laid the foundation for the growth of medical sciences and healthcare services within BHU, ultimately leading to the establishment of advanced institutions committed to public welfare, academic excellence, and scientific progress. Through the Institute of Medical Sciences and its associated hospitals, the University has been serving the healthcare needs of Eastern Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring regions for several decades.

History of Trauma Centre, IMS-BHU

The establishment of the Trauma Centre at IMS-BHU was driven by the growing demand for specialized emergency and trauma care facilities in Northern and Eastern India. The rising incidence of road traffic accidents, industrial trauma, burn injuries, neurosurgical emergencies, and other critical medical conditions highlighted the urgent need for a dedicated tertiary-level trauma and critical care institution capable of providing rapid, multidisciplinary, and advanced medical management.

The Trauma Centre was established under the Government of India's flagship healthcare strengthening initiative, the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), aimed at improving access to affordable and high-quality tertiary healthcare services across the country.

The project was undertaken with substantial infrastructural and technological investment to develop a modern and integrated trauma and emergency care facility for the region. The centre was constructed by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) at an estimated cost of approximately ₹147 crore.

Construction work commenced in 2009 and was completed in phases with the vision of developing one of the largest trauma care facilities in India. The institution is designed to provide comprehensive emergency healthcare services equipped with state-of-the-art operation theatres, intensive care units, advanced imaging facilities, specialized trauma wards, and multidisciplinary clinical departments.

The Trauma Centre became operational in 2015, marking a significant milestone in strengthening emergency healthcare services in Eastern India. Over the years, the institution further expanded its infrastructure and healthcare services, evolving into a 354-bedded Level-1 Trauma Centre, now recognized as one of the largest Trauma Centres in India.

Since its establishment, the Trauma Centre has emerged as a major referral centre catering not only to patients from Uttar Pradesh but also from neighbouring states including Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and other parts of Northern and Eastern India. Today, it continues to carry forward the enduring legacy and ideals of Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya through compassionate healthcare, academic excellence, research, innovation, and dedicated service to humanity.
