The Trauma Centre, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, is equipped with comprehensive clinical infrastructure and advanced healthcare technologies to ensure seamless, efficient, and high-quality patient care. The Centre provides multidisciplinary trauma and emergency management supported by modern medical systems and highly trained healthcare professionals.
Accidental emergency, Trauma & Triage Services
24*7 Accidental emergency and Trauma Services form the core of the Trauma Centre provide immediate life-saving interventions. Patients arriving with road traffic injuries, falls, burns, assaults, and other medical emergencies are assessed immediately through a structured triage system that helps prioritize treatment according to the severity of illness or injury.
The Trauma Centre manages approximately 3,000 emergency patients every month and serves as a major referral centre for Eastern Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states. A dedicated Trauma Bay based on the Israeli Trauma Care Model enables rapid resuscitation and stabilization of critically injured patients. The facility is further supported by a Disaster Management Ward for mass casualty situations and a dedicated Pediatric Trauma Unit for the management of injured children.
Experts in neurosurgery, orthopaedics, trauma surgery, plastic surgery, and oral and maxillofacial surgery are available around-the-clock to guarantee prompt intervention when needed, together with medical officers and nursing staff. The use of Trauma Centre BHU (TCBHU) Scoring and TRISS systems also supports scientific assessment and outcome prediction in severely injured patients.
Round-the-clock ambulance services are available with fully equipped with essential life support systems for rapid transportation of critically ill and trauma patients, ensuring timely access to emergency care.
Outpatient Department (OPD) Services
The Outpatient Department serves as an important link between emergency care, surgical treatment, follow-up services, and rehabilitation. Patients who require specialist consultation after discharge, long-term treatment planning, or post-operative review are managed through dedicated outpatient clinics.
Specialized OPDs in Orthopaedics, Plastic Surgery and follow up OPD of Trauma Surgery provide expert evaluation and treatment planning. Approximately 16,100 patients utilize these services every month. Digital registration and consultation through the Hospital Information Management System (HIMS) help streamline patient flow and reduce waiting times while ensuring continuity of care. Consultants in the OPD also generate electronic prescription slips through the EMR (Electronic Medical Record) system in OPD, ensuring accurate, paperless, and efficient documentation of patient treatment.
Control & Command Desk
The Central Control & Command Centre serves as a central assistance and coordination facility for patients, attendants, and hospital departments. It functions round the clock and acts as a single point of contact for information, guidance, and support related to hospital services.
Patients and attendants can approach the centre for assistance regarding admissions, bed availability, patient location, departmental coordination, and other hospital-related queries. Trained personnel provide timely information and guide visitors to the appropriate departments, helping them navigate the hospital more easily.
The centre also supports coordination between various clinical and administrative units, enabling smoother patient flow and efficient management of hospital services. By providing real-time information and assistance, it helps in improving communication, reduce confusion, and enhance the overall patient experience.
Hospital Administrative Support Centre (24×7 Operations)
The Hospital Administrative Support Centre serves as a dedicated support and grievance redressal facility for patients and their attendants. It acts as a central point where individuals can seek assistance regarding hospital services, admissions, payments, administrative procedures, and other concerns of patient and attendants.
The centre remains operational 24×7 and is staffed by a Hospital Administrator (HA) who is available on duty round the clock. Patients and attendants can approach the HA for guidance, support, and resolution of issues related to their hospital experience. Whether it involves administrative difficulties, payment-related concerns, coordination between departments, or other service-related matters, the Hospital Administrator works closely with the concerned teams to facilitate timely resolution.
During evening and night hours, the Hospital Administrative Support Centre functions as an extension of the Office of the Professor In-Charge, ensuring that administrative oversight and patient support remain available beyond routine working hours. This enables prompt attention to important issues even outside regular office timings.
The centre also monitors and addresses grievances received through various channels, including the online grievance portal. Complaints and feedback submitted by patients or attendants are reviewed and addressed in a time-bound manner, with efforts made to resolve concerns within 48 hours whenever possible. Through continuous support, coordination, and grievance management, the facility helps strengthen communication between patients and the hospital administration while improving the overall patient experience.
Critical Care & Intensive Care Services
The Critical Care Unit is dedicated to the management of patients with severe trauma, major surgical conditions, respiratory failure, and other life-threatening conditions requiring continuous monitoring and advanced medical support. The facility includes a 15-bedded Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and a 15-bedded High Dependency Unit (HDU), equipped with centralized monitoring systems, modern ventilators, and advanced life-support equipment. Critically ill patients receive 24×7 care from a multidisciplinary team comprising Resident doctors, Nursing staff, Physiotherapists, and Dietitians.
To promote patient safety and evidence-based treatment, the unit follows an Electronic Medical Record (EMR)-based Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) monitoring system. Antibiotic prescriptions are regularly reviewed in accordance with microbiology reports and institutional antibiotic policies to ensure the rational use of antibiotics. This helps optimize treatment, minimize unnecessary antibiotic exposure, and support efforts to reduce Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).
The unit is further supported by advanced facilities such as ECMO, portable bedside X-ray services, bedside sample collection by trained phlebotomists, and a dedicated Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) analyzer for rapid assessment of critically ill patients whenever required. Air purification systems, strict infection control measures, and biomedical waste management practices help maintain a safe and controlled environment for patient care.
Operation Theatres & Surgical Services
The Trauma Centre houses 17 modular operation theatres equipped with HEPA filtration systems to support safe and efficient surgical care. Emergency Operation Theatres function 24×7 for urgent and life-saving procedures, while Elective Operation Theatres are conducted according to pre-planned surgical schedules across specialties including Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Trauma Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS).
Patients receive comprehensive perioperative care, including pre-operative assessment, intra-operative monitoring, and post-operative management. Dedicated surgical, anaesthesia, nursing and other paramedical teams work together to ensure quality patient care throughout the surgical process.
The Centre has recently introduced a Robotic-Assisted Knee Replacement Surgery System, an advanced technology designed to assist surgeons in performing knee replacement procedures with greater precision and accuracy. Microbiology Laboratory Services
The Clinical Microbiology Laboratory operates 24×7 and plays a vital role in the diagnosis of infections, identification of disease-causing organisms, and guidance of appropriate antimicrobial therapy for patients. It supports emergency, inpatient, critical care, and surgical services through timely and accurate microbiological investigations. Equipped with advanced technologies such as the BioFire FilmArray System, MALDI-TOF MS, VITEK® 2 Compact, BacT/ALERT, and VIDAS Platform, the laboratory enables rapid pathogen detection and antimicrobial susceptibility testing, supporting evidence-based treatment decisions and infection control practices.

Clinical Laboratory & Blood Bank Services
The Clinical Laboratory provides comprehensive diagnostic services that support emergency care, inpatient management, surgical services, and critical care. Equipped with advanced analyser’s such as the ADVIA and Atellica systems, the laboratory delivers accurate and timely test results to assist clinicians in diagnosis and treatment planning. The laboratory is NABL-accredited and offers a wide range of investigations at affordable and patient-friendly costs, ensuring access to quality diagnostic services for patients from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Emergency investigations are prioritized, with many critical reports available within a turnaround time of two to four hours.
The Blood Bank functions 24×7 and plays a vital role in supporting trauma care, emergency services, surgeries, and critically ill patients. The facility is equipped with component separation services, enabling the availability of packed red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma, platelets and other blood components according to individual patient requirements. In emergency situations involving severe trauma and major blood loss, blood bags and blood components can be made available on an urgent basis to support timely resuscitation and life-saving treatment. Strict donor screening, blood testing, and quality control practices are followed to ensure the safety, reliability, and availability of blood products whenever required.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a specialized treatment in which patients receive high-concentration oxygen in a controlled pressurized environment. This therapy helps improve oxygen delivery to tissues, supports wound healing, promotes tissue regeneration, and assists in the management of selected infection and trauma related complications.
The Trauma Centre is the only hospital in Eastern Uttar Pradesh currently providing HBOT services, making this advanced treatment accessible to patients who would otherwise need to travel long distances for such care. More than 200 patients benefit from HBOT services every month.
Despite being a highly specialized therapy, HBOT is offered at an affordable and patient-friendly cost, reflecting the Centre’s commitment to making advanced healthcare technologies accessible to a larger population.
Digital Healthcare & HIMS Integration
Digital technology has become an integral part of modern healthcare, enhancing efficiency, transparency, and patient convenience. The Trauma Centre has implemented a comprehensive Hospital Information Management System (HIMS) to streamline clinical, administrative, and support services across departments. The system supports OPD registration, emergency registration, inpatient admissions, laboratory services, radiology reporting, bed management, and electronic referral management. By reducing paperwork and improving access to patient information, HIMS enables healthcare professionals to coordinate care more effectively and make informed clinical decisions. The digital ecosystem is further strengthened through integration with multiple platforms, including the Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) portal, TC-BHU scoring portal, AMR (Antimicrobial Resistance) surveillance portal, and online microbiology and laboratory reporting system, ensuring seamless coordination between clinical services, diagnostics, and government health schemes. In addition, library management systems support academic resources and research activities, while network and IT management systems ensure secure, efficient, and uninterrupted digital operations across the hospital.
Patients can also benefit from integrated digital payment solutions, allowing them to scan QR codes and make online payments for hospital charges without standing in long queues. This cashless and queue-free system significantly improves convenience and reduces waiting time. Self-registration kiosks installed near OPD and emergency registration counters further enable patients to register independently, improving patient flow and reducing waiting time at counters.
The Medical Records Department (MRD) has also been digitized, enabling patients and attendants to complete and submit various hospital forms online, thereby reducing paperwork and simplifying administrative processes. Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) Facilitation Services
Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) is one of India’s largest government-funded health assurance schemes, providing financial protection and access to healthcare services for eligible beneficiaries. To facilitate access to these benefits, a dedicated Ayushman Bharat Help Desk and Facilitation Counter operate within the Trauma Centre.
The facility assists patients and their attendants with eligibility verification, ABHA card creation and linking, documentation requirements and treatment-related approvals. Dedicated personnel guide beneficiaries through the necessary procedures and coordinate with relevant departments to ensure smooth processing of claims and healthcare benefits.
By simplifying administrative processes and supporting cashless treatment under eligible categories, the facility helps reduce the financial burden on patients and improves access to quality healthcare services. The integration of PM-JAY services reflects the Trauma Centre’s commitment to affordable and accessible healthcare.

Free meals are provided to admitted patients and their attendants, while essential medicines and consumables required during inpatient care are supplied without additional cost. In addition, digital X-ray films are also provided free of cost in cases where patients are unable to afford them due to financial constraints, ensuring that no patient is deprived of essential diagnostic support.
Additional support is available through the Jan Aushadhi Kendra, which provides cost-effective generic medicines at affordable rates, ensuring access to essential drugs at subsidized prices. An outsourced UMANG Pharmacy is also operational within the Trauma Centre premises, further improving the availability of medicines for patients and attendants. The hospital also provides a range of accommodation facilities, including General beds (available at highly affordable charges of approximately ₹200), Semi-Private, Private, Deluxe, and Day-Care beds, allowing patients to choose options based on their needs and financial capacity.
In cases where patients are unable to afford the cost of treatment, a PI Office Committee verification process is conducted. After due assessment, eligible patients may receive complete financial waiver, ensuring that all treatment charges are fully exempted for genuinely economically weaker patients. Regulated pricing under rate-contract policies for orthopaedic and OMFS implants further promotes cost-effective surgical care and transparency in billing.

Dharamshala, located within the Trauma Centre campus, provides affordable accommodation for attendants and family members travelling from distant locations. The availability of accommodation within the campus helps reduce logistical and financial challenges faced by families during prolonged hospitalization and allows them to remain close to their loved ones throughout the treatment process.
